J is for JavaScript: Jumping into the ABCs of AI
Hello, brilliant explorers! Are you ready for another exciting chapter in our ABCs of AI series? So far, we've learned about everything from Algorithms to Intelligence. Today, we're going to jump into the letter J, which stands for "JavaScript." Let's discover what JavaScript is and how it helps create fun things on computers and the internet!
What is JavaScript?
JavaScript is a special “coding” language (you first learned about coding when we talked about the letter C) that computer programmers (people who train computers) use to make websites and games on the internet do amazing things. It’s like the magic words that make characters in games move, let you interact with websites, and even help you watch videos online.
How Does JavaScript Work?
Think of JavaScript like the instructions you give when playing with your toys. For example, if you tell your toy car to move forward, turn right, then stop, you're giving it a simple program to follow. JavaScript works similarly, but for computers. Programmers write instructions in JavaScript to tell the computer what to do when you click a button or type in information.
JavaScript All Around Us!
You might not see it, but JavaScript is everywhere on the internet! Here’s how it’s used:
Web Games: Many of the games you play on the internet are made with JavaScript. It tells the game how to react when you press keys or click your mouse.
Interactive Websites: Websites that let you pick colors for a drawing, or move items around on the screen, use JavaScript to make those things work.
Animations and Videos: JavaScript helps control animations and videos on websites, making them start, stop, or change according to what you want to see.
Fun Facts about JavaScript
Super Popular: JavaScript is one of the most popular programming languages in the world. Almost every website you visit uses some JavaScript.
Not Just for Computers: Although it's called JavaScript, it doesn't have much to do with the Java programming language. It’s its own type of language!
Creative and Fun: JavaScript can be used to create art! Some people use JavaScript to make digital art that changes and moves.
Let’s Play a JavaScript Game!
Game: Command a Robot You need: Paper, markers, and a toy.
Draw a path: Use the markers to draw a simple path or maze on a piece of paper.
Write commands: Write simple commands on another piece of paper that would tell a toy how to move through the path (like "move straight," "turn left").
Follow the commands: Use the toy and follow your written commands to navigate the path you drew. See if the toy can reach the end of the maze!
This game is similar to how JavaScript tells computers what to do. You’re writing the script, and your toy is the computer!
What’s Next?
Now that you know what JavaScript is and some cool things it can do, think about what you might create if you could program a computer. Maybe a game, a story, or a drawing program?
Activities to Try at Home
With a parent, try visiting a website that teaches basic JavaScript through fun games and activities. Websites like Code.org offer simple and interactive coding activities that can help you start learning JavaScript.
